Man with red shirt - Pastel 24" x 18" by Noel darvie
It has been a while since I did a pastel. I did this pastel today at an open studio at the local museum. It is a two hour head study on archival paper.
This blog relates to my endeavors as a painter. I've been painting for about forty years.I don't make my living as a painter, but it is my passion and I paint every free moment I have.
I studied art in the evening after work for seven years. I studied at the Westchester Art Workshop with Stephen Rogers Peck and Frank Liljegren. I also studied at the Art Students League five evenings a week and all day Saturday for a year. I studied under Daniel Greene, Gustav Rehberger and Ray Goodbred. I also studied under Clifford Jackson at his studio in Amawalk, NY.
As a student, my subject matter was portrait and figure drawing and painting. However, about thirty years ago I started to paint landscapes on location (en Plein Air), and it has been been my preferred subject matter ever since then. I work Alla Prima, and complete my paintings in one sitting. I also do studio work, but ninety five percent of my work is in the field. For me there is no greater challenge then trying to capture a moment in time on canvas. My painting mediums are oils and pastels.
Going forward, as time permits, I hope to post some of my work and thoughts on this blog.
